Homemade Soy Powder/Black Soybean Powder Black Bean Powder/SOYbean Flour Step-by-Step for Snacks and Building Muscle
Soy powder for your healthy diet? If you want a healthy protein snack, you can roast soybeans or black soybeans and enjoy them as snacks or use them to tide you over between meals. If you prefer a healthy protein drink, soy powder or black soy powder may be a good way to add nutrition to your diet and to build muscle after intensive exercise.

Step-by-Step
SOY POWDER
Roasting Equipment:- A popcorn machine and a coffee grinder
OR A frying pan and a blender that has wave-action blades (ex., Hamilton Beach Blender) - 2-3 c. soy, black soy, or black beans, or as much as you want to grind at once (you have to grind them quickly while they are still hot and tender, right after roasting).
How to Make Roasted Soy Powder/Black Soy Powder (Black Bean Powder)
- Rinse soybeans, black soybeans, or black beans a few times to remove dust. Drain well before roasting.
- If you have a popcorn machine, this is a perfect way to roast black soybeans or soybeans. Put handfuls of cleaned beans in the machine, roast them until brown, and stir them a few times so they are roasted evenly.
- Or if you don’t have a popcorn machine, roast soybeans or black soybeans in a frying pan without oil on high heat.
Stir the wet beans consistently so they roast evenly. This will also dry off the water on the surface of the beans. Keep stirring until they turn brown (About 10-15 minutes). Taste one. If you can chew it easily, then it is done. The benefit of roasting beans on the frying pan is you can roast as many as you want.
- Immediately after roasting, you must eat the beans, make them into soy protein bars, or grind them. When the beans get cold, they will be harder to chew. (This is because soybeans contain lots of calcium.)
- If you want soy powder or black soy powder, you have to grind the beans right after roasting them, before they get too hard. If you have a special grinder, you can use it.
Otherwise, you can use a coffee grinder to make bean powder. (In the soy flour recipe, if you grind raw soybeans or black beans with a coffee grinder, the machine won’t work.) You will need a special grinder for raw soybeans to make soy flour. Other than that, a coffee grinder will work well for roasted beans.
- OR If you don’t have a coffee grinder, then you can also use a blender that has wave-action blades. I use a Hamilton Beach blender (that has the wave-action blades) to make the soy powder. It turns out pretty well.
When using the blender, you have to make sure the powder is ground evenly by stirring or shaking to the center of the blades. (Note: Unlike soy flour recipe, soybeans need to be roasted to make soy powder)
It is simple and easy. After cleaning soybeans, you just grind raw soybeans into a fine powder. Then, you must cook the soy flour so that your body can intake the inhibitor that is found in soybeans. Soy is an inexpensive, healthy protein that you can add into your food in many ways.

Three SOY Recipes with SOY POWDER
 When making rice crispy treats, you can use roasted soybeans or black soybeans instead of rice cereal. Just layer them thinner than you normally would layer rice crispy treats; then it’s easier to cut them. The soy or black soy protein bars will keep for a few months in a cold area. What machine should I use for roasting soy/black soybeans? For homemade protein bars, you have to use a popcorn machine to roast and pop soy/black soybeans by consistently stirring the beans. People in Korea use a big popping machine to roast and pop beans or corn. Using a popcorn machine will make beans chewable and tasty. When making protein bars, adding your favorite nuts is also a great idea to increase nutrition. Making soy protein bars together can be a fun family activity with your kids. I used to make soy or black soy protein bars in that way with my father before New Year’s.

- After roasting the soybeans or black soybeans, grind them immediately. They will become more flavorful without adding any sugar. If you want them to be sweeter, you can mix in honey powder.
- Cook brown or white rice and make a small ball, like a small meatball, with your hand. It will be sticky.
- Coat the rice ball in roasted soybean powder or black soybean powder to finish the nuggets.
- This healthy snack is good for seniors, adults, or kids.
- If you like fried rice nuggets, you can dip them in egg/coat with bread crumbs and fry them in oil. Alternatively, you can mix rice and bean powder together before making rice balls and mold them in your hand before frying.
- Enjoy Rice Nuggets!
If you want, you can add some seeds (sunflower seeds, black sesame seeds, or your favorite seeds) into the rice before making a small ball.

  If you want to make rice cake, rice (Extra Fancy) or sticky rice (EF) and soy/black soy powder (sometimes you can add whole boiled black soybeans into black soybean powder) are usually used. (No long grain rice) - Soak rice thoroughly. Drain water completely from the rice in a strainer. If the rice is not wet to the touch, you are ready to make rice powder
- Grind drained rice first and add little bit of water into the rice powder. Then mix the rice powder and water to make the rice powder a little soggy. Use a strainer and slightly filter the moist rice powder. Then add sweetener and little bit of salt to the rice powder.
- For the next layer, prepare soy powder or black bean powder like the recipe above. At this time, soybeans/black beans should not be over roasted. Add some water to the soy/black soybean powder and then filter it with a strainer like you did with the rice powder. And then add sweetener and a little bit of salt to the roasted soy powder/black soybean powder.
- Cover a stainless steel strainer with a damp cotton cloth. Make a layer of soggy rice powder and then add a layer of soggy soy/black soybean powder on top. You can also add some boiled black beans to the layer of black soybean powder. This adds a little crunch and variety to the dish.
- After making a few alternating layers of rice and bean/soy powder, cover the strainer tightly (use the rice dough to seal between the strainer and a pot) and steam it in a pot about 20-45 minutes until rice powder turns to a rice cake. Like baking a bread, use a toothpick or chopstick to check if the cake is done. If you don't see any powder on it, the soy rice cake is done. The steaming time will vary depending on the amount of rice powder. You can check it in 20 minutes.
- Serve the rice cake while hot and warm.
(Note: filtering the soggy powder will give the soy powder texture. For steaming rice cake, you will need a stainless steel strainer to get the best result.)

Tips: If you have strong teeth, you can just eat the beans after roasting them. However, if you worry about your teeth, grind the beans into a powder.

Adding sweeteners like natural honey or honey powder is a good way to improve the flavor. Honey powder has become a popular natural flavor and is easy to mix with the powder. For a snack, some people just eat the soy/black bean powder after mixing it with honey powder. If you have your own natural sweetener, you can add it instead.
